Reveal Digital is pleased to announce that four projects were submitted under the 2018 Spot Grants funding cycle. They are currently under review by the Editorial Board who will make a final determination on funding.
Ben Yellen Papers: Southern California Political Crusader, 1956-1991
Sponsor: UC San Diego Library
Contact: Lynda Claassen (lclaassen@ucsd.edu)
Finding Aid
The Ben Yellen Papers document decades of advocacy on behalf of the rural poor against California’s modern-day industrial and agricultural giants, while illustrating the historical and ever-present California issues of migrant labor and water distribution. While treating Mexican laborers who were in the U.S. to work through the bracero program, Imperial County physician Ben Yellen became aware of the unfair and controversial practices visited upon these workers by corporate interests. He also took on the issue of water rights for small farmers in his attempts to enforce compliance with the Reclamation Act of 1902.
Publications of the University of Wisconsin Gender and Women’s Studies Librarian
Sponsor: University of Wisconsin-Madison
Contact: Karla Strand (karla.strand@wisc.edu)
Finding Aid
This project would make available via Reveal Digital two of the three flagship publications of the University of Wisconsin System Office of the Gender and Women’s Studies Librarian, a premier resource for gender and women’s studies, feminist studies, and LGBTQ studies in the US. These publications offer an important view into the evolution of gender and women’s studies scholarship, publishing, and research.
Socialism in the US: Selections from the Papers of Edith and Arthur Fox, 1934-1975
Sponsor: Michigan State University Libraries
Contact: Michael Rodriquez (rodri171@lib.msu.edu)
Finding Aid
Though the collection contains materials relating to union organizing in Detroit, the strength of the collection lies in the narrative of the Socialist Party of America from the 1930s to the early 70s. The Edith and Arthur Fox Collection at the MSU Special Collections highlights decades of work by Edith and Arthur Fox, two political and labor activists in the Detroit area. Both were heavily involved in a number of groups within the United Auto Workers, including the United National Caucus, as well as the Trotskyite Socialist Workers Party.
UCLA Students, Student Activism Materials, 1927-2014
Sponsor: UCLA Library
Contact: Sharon E. Farb (farb@library.ucla.edu)
Finding Aid
Contains material related to student activism at UCLA throughout the 20th and early 21st centuries. Themes include communism, pacifism, World War II, Vietnam War, civil rights and freedom of expression.
Based on the current funding available in the Diversity & Dissent Digitization Fund, three to four projects, each in the $5,000 – $10,000 range, will be selected to move forward. Spot Grant projects will be composed of printed material (serials, monographs, reports, etc.), that can be easily loaded into Reveal Digital’s existing platform. In future years we plan to extend our hosting capabilities to include other content types like audio and video files.
The Diversity & Dissent Editorial Board will be reviewing each proposal and making the final funding determination for this initial round of funding. In subsequent years, as the value of the fund grows and the size of the awards increase, we will be looking to the funding libraries and an interactive voting process, to help set the funding priorities.
